Installing Asterisk PBX on Linode

without comments

I had a lot of trouble installing Asterisk 1.8 on linode with Ubuntu 12.04. The guide here: https://library.linode.com/communications/voip-services didn’t work for me. I’m going to document what I did for future reference.

I first logged into my server as a root user. Then I ran this:

apt-get install linux-image-virtual

I then followed the instructions for configuring the kernel in the section: Install and Configure Grub. It is extremely important that the kernal is configured exactly, or else you will get lots of headaches.

I then went to Dahdi website and downloaded the latest version.

I unarchived the dahdi file, and ran the commands to install it
make all
make install

I then went to Asterisk server to download version 1.8 LTS.

I unarchived the asterisks file. Then ran the following commands within the asterisk folder
./configure
./make menuselect

You will then see a table of contents. I chose Compile Flags and unchecked BUILD_NATIVE. I saved and exited.

Then I ran the following commands:
./make
./make install
./make sample
chmod -R asterisk /var/lib/asterisk
chmod -R asterisk /var/log/asterisk

And now asterisk is installed and working.
